The Art and Architecture of Cuba | January 11-18, 2014
Sweet Briar College's President, Dr. Jo Ellen Parker and husband, Rick, cordially invite you to join us for a week in Havana and the Cuban countryside. This is a rare opportunity and space is limited. We will be traveling under a special license from the United States Department of Treasury for this trip, which has been especially designed for Sweet Briar travelers. Since I have wanted to visit Cuba for years and have never before had the opportunity to go, I am especially excited about this trip! Our itinerary will provide an introduction to Cuba’s art and architecture. We will have access to artists, architectural historians and other individuals involved in contemporary Cuban culture. We will travel round-trip to Havana, via chartered flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) very early on Saturday morning, January 11, and return to Miami in the early afternoon on Saturday, January 18. Given the restrictions on travel to Cuba, individual flight arrangements and deviations from the itinerary are not possible. Travelers will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements to meet the group in Miami. Accommodations for seven nights will be at the Hotel Saratoga. Located in the heart of Old Havana, it features a rooftop swimming pool with a panoramic view of modern Havana, the old town and the sea. The hotel also has a business center, various restaurants and bars, a gym and a spa. We will also enjoy a two-day excursion by private motorcoach to the historic cities of Matanzas, Varadero, and Cardenas. Matanzas, located on the northern shore of the island, is known for its poets, and Afro-Cuban folklore. In Varadero, we will enjoy lunch at Xanadu, one of the many mansions-turned-museums in the area, and a favorite spot for history buffs like me. It will also be possible to check out near-by Cardenas, a beautiful port town rich in history and art, before our overnight stay at the hotel Melia Paradisus.
As a service to its travelers, the Sweet Briar College Travel Program provides all travelers with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group travel insurance policy. Sweet Briar College strongly encourages travelers to supplement this basic protection with their own additional coverage, trip cancellation/interruption and baggage coverage, since those benefits are not provided in the group policy.
