At the Crossroads of Cultures: Exploring the Treasures of Indochina
January 6-20, 2003
The mystery of Southeast Asia, a land layered by a rich and complicated
history, is an exotic paradox to the Western mind.
Join fellow Sweet Briar
College alumnae as we dismantle mysteries and myths by exploring Vietnam
and Cambodia on this deluxe tour.
Luxuriate in the region's finest hotels
and enjoy delectable regional cuisine, while traveling through lush countrysides,
along glistening coastlines, and through French-colonial boulevards.
VIETNAM
Our
program begins in majestic Hanoi, Southeast Asia's oldest capital.
After
a leisurely day sailing on an authentic Asian sampan across Halong Bay,
we fly to the ancient capital of Hue' to visit the imposing citadel that
includes the inner sanctum of the Forbidden Purple City.
Next we drive
through Hai Van Pass - renowned as the most spectacular land journey in
the world - to Danang and Hoi An, where we will explore the legacy of
the Cham rulers, including a visit to the incredible Cham Museum in Danang.
Saigon is our final destination in Vietnam as we visit the renowned Mekong
Delta, Cu Chi tunnels and the Reunification Palace, eerily preserved as
it looked on that fateful day of the Viet Cong takeover in 1975.
A private
cooking lesson by one of the leading chefs in Saigon, and meetings with
former VC soldiers provide highlights for this unusual experience.
CAMBODIA
The
final portion of our journey is spent exploring the splendors of Cambodia,
including the revived capital city of Phnom Penh, where we will view its
important collection of Khmer art, and the famed Angkor Wat ruins - described
by experts as unsurpassed among the archaeological wonders of the world.
With luxurious accommodations, fine dining experiences, numerous private
visits and outstanding educational lectures, this adventure promises a
truly unforgettable experience.
