Opera in Prague and Vienna: Composers and Castles of Central Europe
February 28 - March 9, 2003
With legends of Mozart, Wagner, and Schubert permeating the atmosphere
and sweet strains of music emanating from public squares and private palaces,
Prague and
Vienna combine to become an opera lover's trip of a lifetime.
The lavish
courts of these two regal cities both nurtured and inspired many of Europe's
greatest musical minds and their opera houses reverberate today with the
masterpieces they created centuries ago.
Sweet Briar College Alumnae Association, inspired by the musical traditions
of these two great European cities, is pleased to offer this rich travel
program which presents music lovers with a seemingly endless series of
special encounters, private recitals, and grand musical performances that
will impress even the most sophisticated traveler.
PRAGUE
The journey begins
in the captivating city of Prague, where we will stay in the beautiful
Grand Bohemia Hotel.
In Prague, we attend two outstanding opera performances,
experiencing both the National Theater and the Prague Opera House.
Exclusive
musical experiences include a private concert and lecture at the Estates
Theater, a private chamber performance in the frescoed halls of the Strahov
monastery, and a special performance and luncheon in our honor at the
lovely Nelahozeves Castle, hosted by Prince Lobkowicz.
The city's unsurpassed
skyline will unfold dramatically during a luncheon cruise on the Vltava
River.
And the lives of great composers who worked in Prague - Mozart,
Dvorak, Smetana, and others - will be examined during lectures and guided
tours.
VIENNA
Our next stop is Vienna. Certainly, the highlight here will be premiere
seats for an evening performance at the State Opera House, perhaps the
greatest mecca in the world for opera lovers.
Also featured is a performance
at the Folks Opera and a performance by the famed Vienna Boys' Choir.
We will also learn of the city's artistic heritage, with tours of the
magnificent Kunsthistoriches Museum, Art Nouveau Secessionist Building,
and towering St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Our hotel in Vienna will be the
luxurious Bristol.
