Sweet Briar College Alumnae Tour
with Dr. Lincoln Brower
|
From the Editor's Desk
As September 26 approaches, the College anticipates one of its largest annual events. The Alumnae Association of Sweet Briar College invites you to join us for Homecoming Weekend, Sept. 26-28, 2008. During the weekend, continue your Sweet Briar education with fascinating lectures by Sweet Briar's celebrated professors, Dr. Barbara Perry and Dr. Lincoln Brower. Dr. Perry, expert on government and politics will speak on George Washington's legacy, and Dr. Brower will share his insight into the world of the monarch butterfly.
Throughout the weekend, we'll celebrate many of the traditions that caught your interest as a prospective student and cemented your loyalty to the College. Join us for Founders' Day Convocation and the procession to Monument Hill to place flowers on Daisy's grave. Also, become a part of a new tradition, the Cardboard Boat Regatta and picnic. Watch engineering students brave the waters of the Sweet Briar Lake in a challenge to paddle the best handmade, student-designed cardboard boat.
While you're here, check on the progress of the new fitness and athletics center, being built adjacent to the Daisy Williams Gymnasium. Athletic events will take place throughout the day on Saturday at various locations. This is the best time to wear your pinks (if your class year is even) or your greens (if your class year is odd). Keep the Pink and Green Competition alive!
Finally, help us to thank President Muhlenfeld for 13 years of service at the Saturday night dinner and dance-a time of wonderful food, fun music, and fellowship.

See the reservations brochure for details.
Dr. Perry's lecture will identify the leadership traits George Washington exhibited in his military and political careers, place them in context of the U.S. presidency, and describe how modern presidents can apply them in domestic and foreign affairs. The lecture will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. after the boxed lunch picnic and Cardboard Boat Regatta, on Saturday of Homecoming.
Dr. Barbara A. Perry is Carter Glass Professor of Government and founding director of
the Center for Civic Renewal and the Virginia Law-Related Education Center at Sweet
Briar. In 1994-95 she was a judicial fellow at the U.S. Supreme Court, where she received the Tom C. Clark Award as the outstanding fellow that year.
Alumnae College at Mount Vernon
We're excited to announce that on March 9, 2009, Sweet Briar College Carter Glass Professor of Government Barbara Perry will join lecturers James Rees, executive director of Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, and General William Suter, clerk of the Supreme Court, to speak on the topic: "From George Washington to Washington D.C.: How Leaders Decide." The event will take place at Mount Vernon, home of America's first president, George Washington.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for area alumnae to participate in a follow-up lecture to Dr. Barbara Perry's Homecoming Weekend Alumnae College.
Invitation to follow for area alumnae.

The annual round trip migration of the monarch butterfly in North America is remarkable in its beauty, complexity, and implications. Though one of the commonest of American butterflies and not endangered as a species, the monarch's marvelous adaptive repertoire has become an endangered biological phenomenon. photo by: Lincoln BrowerMajor threats include: massive farming with genetically engineered crops in the North American heartland that eliminates both adult nectar and larval food resources; unrelenting forest degradation in the monarchs' splendid overwintering areas in the volcanic highlands of central Mexico that interferes with the remarkable microclimatic adaptations of the wintering butterflies; and human encroachment on coastal overwintering habitat. Positive approaches on how we can implement successful conservation of this unique biological phenomenon for the long term will be considered. The lecture will be based on Professor Brower's 54 years of research on monarchs, his 31 years of visiting the Mexican colonies, and will be copiously illustrated with still and video imagery taken on the ground, in the air, and from outer space.
photo by: Linda FinkLincoln Pierson Brower (B.A. 1953, Princeton University, Ph.D. 1957, Yale University) is Distinguished Service Professor of Zoology, Emeritus at the University of Florida. In 1997, he was appointed Research Professor of Biology at Sweet Briar College, and now lives with his wife and three German Shepherds in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, Virginia. His research interests include the overwintering and migration biology of the monarch butterfly, chemical defense, ecological chemistry, mimicry, scientific film making, and the conservation of endangered biological phenomena and ecosystems.

SBC Homecoming 2008 Welcomes Senator Patricia "Patsy" Smith Ticer '55, Recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Alumna Award
Senator Patsy Ticer, Virginia State Senator for the 30th District, is the 2008 Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient. Prior to serving in the state senate, Patsy was elevated from vice mayor to the position of mayor of the City of Alexandria in January 1991. Patsy is the first woman to become mayor in the history of the City. In May of that year, she was elected to the full three-year term, becoming the first woman to be elected to the mayor's chair.
Join us for Homecoming Weekend as we celebrate Senator Ticer's accomplishments in the Commonwealth as she has worked to support agriculture, conservation and natural resources, and children's health and education.
What's Your Color?

It's easy! If your graduating class year ends in an even number, you're pink; if it ends in an odd number, you're green!
Each year during Homecoming, alumnae and students take part in a spirit competition. Wear your color to the Saturday Picnic and Cardboard Boat Regatta and other outdoor events to be the team with the most Sweet Briar spirit. Last year, the green team stole the show. Let's see if the pink team will make a comeback! Join us for Homecoming 2008!
