Alumnae and Career Professionals Offer Helpful Career Tips at the Commerce Career Event

Nancy Kleinhans
Assistant Director, Alumnae Association
A Commerce Career Event was held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 hosted by Career Services. The impressive career panel boasted alumnae and career professionals from a wide range of career backgrounds. Lynsie Watkins '05, entrepreneur and founder of Perfect Flavor-an organic approach to ice cream creations-shared her insights on creating your own business. Circuit City process analyst Monique Sample '05 talked about the importance of stepping outside the box even when you are the go-to person for photocopies and coffee.
Some spoke of the traits they look for when hiring students who have recently graduated. In their view, the ideal candidate is someone willing to take on tasks beyond what their job description states on paper; a desirable trait no matter what field of work you are in. Many panelists felt that in today's society where e-mail is our main tool of communication, an old fashioned thank-you note does the trick after an interview-it may even be the deciding factor for some employers!
After the discussion, students met individually with the alumnae and career professionals to ask questions. Students networked and received helpful pointers about career specific questions, career opportunities/internships, and job tips related to their individual interests.
The recurring theme of the night pointed students toward using their own experiences from Sweet Briar College to their advantage. The academic setting, club groups, various activities, and sports all provide experiences for students to apply in the working world.
