Athletic Hall of Fame Criteria

I. Mission Statement

The Sweet Briar College Athletic Hall of Fame honors special achievement by alumnae who have been associated with athletics at the College. We recognize the positive relationship that exists between those traits and attributes that are developed, encouraged, and fostered in athletics and their important role in the total life of a person once she leaves the College.

In addition, the Sweet Briar College Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who, through participation, support, or interest have made outstanding contributions to Sweet Briar College athletics. These individuals have helped bring recognition, honor, distinction and excellence to Sweet Briar College and the intercollegiate athletics program. Note: For selection purposes, the term "varsity sport" includes all sports recognized by the College as competing at the highest level since 1906. The intent is to honor the best athletes of any given class, regardless of the rubric under which they competed.

II. Eligibility Criteria

A person will be considered eligible for nomination to the Sweet Briar College Athletic Hall of Fame if at the time of nomination she/he fulfills one or more of the following criteria.

Varsity Sport
The individual participated in a varsity sport at Sweet Briar College for at least three years and earned a baccalaureate degree from the College. (This criteria may be waived under certain conditions.)

Normally, there will be a lapse of ten years since the athlete last participated at Sweet Briar College. The Hall of Fame Committee has the authority to give earlier consideration in unusual, outstanding cases.

The candidate must have made a positive impact to the team(s) for which she played, including demonstrated athletic achievement, exemplary leadership qualities and character, and/or a significant contribution to the community.

Outstanding accomplishments after leaving Sweet Briar College will also be a factor in making the selections, but the primary emphasis should be on athletic accomplishments while at the College rather than athletic and/or professional accomplishments after graduation.

Extraordinary Service
The individual has made an outstanding contribution or offered extraordinary service to Sweet Briar College athletics as student, coach, staff, or administrator while at the College, or in subsequent years since leaving the College.

There must be a lapse of five years of his/her tenure as a coach/administrator at Sweet Briar College.

The inductee has been, or is, an example of good character and citizenship.

Other factors that will influence the selection of a coach or administrator for induction are:

      a) Win/Loss record at Sweet Briar College.

      b) Length of coaching career at Sweet Briar College.

      c) Concern for the welfare of the athletes.

      d) Achievements of his/her former athletes.

      e) Outstanding achievements after leaving Sweet Briar College.

Significant Contributions
The individual did not attend Sweet Briar College but has made significant contributions to the College's athletic program.

The inductee has made outstanding contributions in the area of athletics to Sweet Briar College.

Time lapse is relative, but the contributions must be of prominence and over a period of years.

The inductee has been, or is, an example of good character and citizenship.

Special Award
A special 'Athletic Hall of Fame Team" award may be presented to an entire team that has distinguished itself in Conference, District, or National competition. Criteria for selection will be decided by the Selection Committee.
