The Fine Arts Major

Each B.F.A. student completes the requirements for one of the following majors:

  • Dance
  • English and Creative Writing
  • Music
  • Studio Art
  • Theatre

The B.F.A. Core Courses

All B.F.A. students must take three semesters (and no more than 8) of the Interdisciplinary Arts Workshop (IART 101), and one semester of Arts Management 105, a four-credit course that introduces students to the essentials of managing arts organizations, as well as one additional course in arts management. These core courses ensure that B.F.A. students think critically and innovatively about the future of the arts.

In the spirit of interdisciplinarity and collaboration that embodies the B.F.A. program, choose 18 credit hours from courses in applied arts and art history/theory.

Note: The additional 18 credits must be from disciplines other than her major and cannot be part of the major requirements. At least 6 credits must be applied arts courses (fulfill V.6b general education knowledge area), and at least 6 of the eighteen credits must be at the 200-level or above.

The Senior Exercise

All B.F.A. students complete a senior exercise (IART 452) that combines two or more of the art areas that she has studied into a performance, exhibition, receital or installation. The excerise is an opportunity for students to explore and push the boundaries of art through the innovative mingling of art media and genres.

Note: IART 452 is required in addition to the senior seminar or exercise required in the major area.
