Prerequisite: GOVT 122. This course examines definitions of democracy and authoritarianism and the rise and fall of democratic regimes primarily throughout the non-western world. We examine cases where democracy is firmly planted and others where it has not been attempted or has failed to take root to discover patterns in the conditions that favor democracy or dictatorship.
