Laissez le Bons Temps Rouler: Art and Identity in New Orleans

Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. This course will explore the relationship between historical and contemporary portraits of the culturally and ethnically diverse city of New Orleans in literature, journalism, film, visual art, and music. Authors, artists, musicians, and directors to be discussed include Kate Chopin, Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty, Walker Percy, John Kennedy Toole, Dan Baum, John James Audubon, Edgar Degas, Enrique Alferez, Hannah Chalew, Spike Lee, Louis Armstrong, Irma Thomas, Aaron Neville, Wynton Marsalis, and Paul Sanchez. Students will be encouraged to apply their own particular academic and research interests to the city and its history.
