The Honors
Journal is like a virtual forum, synthesizing the research and innovative
ideas provided by the eclectic body of Sweet Briar students. How do
you summarize the hard work and brilliance that each young woman exhibits
in her specific Honors work? How do we collaborate on subjects as diverse
as molecular modeling and Roman gender relations? This is the challenge
we face every year when attempting to write the Letter from the Editor,
but we always manage to find a common thread: passion. We have a passion
for learning and sharing. We thrive in this small community where ideas
are exchanged freely and the gaps between subjects are bridged by our
determination to better ourselves. We find that although subjects such
as chemistry and classics are different, they can also mutually enhance
one another if such ideas are cross-fertilized. The world of liberal
arts and a well-balanced education help us learn more about others,
and ultimately teach us about ourselves.

On
a tempestuous tide of estrogen, you stay afloat. Overprotectively smushed
in the bosom of the Virginia foothills, you forge independent personalities.
Saccharine and thorny, genteel and gritty by turns, you wear fashionably
the irony of the Sweet Briar alma mater. You keep astride the spastic
bronco of a liberal arts education; you are young and strong, cultivating
the wiles to make the world genuflect at your feet. You know what (Z)-Ligustilide
Derivatives are and you're not afraid to use them.
Fellow
inmates, brave thinkers, voracious women - we are proud to publish you.
