The purpose of the Pannell Honors Scholars program is to recognize and reward students of exceptional initiative and ability, and to provide them with a unique opportunity to explore an area of interest more fully during their sophomore year. Click here to review application information for the Class of 2016, including important deadlines.

Eligibility
To apply:
First-year Honors students in good standing, as well as the top 15 students in the first year class are invited to apply. Students who are accepted into the Honors Program after the fall semester will be considered eligible based on the qualifications and criteria that accompany their application to the Honors Program.

To receive an award: By the end of the spring semester, honors students must have completed the required First-Year Honors courses or approved substitute/s with a B+ average or higher, completed at least 27 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher.

Award Information
The selected scholars receive a merit award applied to their Sweet Briar College tuition and a $350 credit to the campus bookshop to purchase textbooks. In addition, the award includes funds to support the student’s proposed project, as approved. The maximum budget allowed is $3000; there is no minimum budget and most project budgets are expected within a range of $750-$1000. Most projects are pursued individually; however, group projects are considered as long as they follow slightly modified guidelines.

The Honors Committee, a committee of faculty from different departments across campus, reviews all submitted proposals. The total number of Pannell Scholarships awarded depends on the number of proposals received and the amount of funding requested for each project.

Awards will be selected based on:

  • the quality of the proposal;
  • the merits of the project;
  • the alignment of budget to purpose;
  • the commitment and preparation of the student.
