“Plus ça change…,” an exhibit of photographs by Alix Ingber, will be on display April 5 through May 20 in the Benedict Hall Gallery at Sweet Briar College.
Photos by Alix Ingber will be on display through May 20 in the Benedict Hall Gallery.“It’s the first half of a French expression that we also use in English,” Ingber, a Spanish professor and director of academic advising for the College, explained. “ ‘Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’ [or] ‘The more things change, the more they stay the same.’
In black and white and color, the photographs represent two decades of work – albeit decades separated by nearly 40 years. “I began doing serious work in photography in the late 1960s, working in black and white,” Ingber said.
“In the early 2000s, I returned to photography, this time working in digital media.”
This iguana photographed by Ingber is part of the exhibit.Whether her subject is nature, architectural details, distant lands or close-up shots of everyday items, Ingber says her photographs “reveal a continuity of vision over time.”
As for what inspires her, that’s difficult for the photographer to nail down. “It’s hard to pinpoint inspiration,” she said. “I tend to seek out quirky images, but I often find that what I end up with is very different from what I had intended to shoot.
“Inspiration, more often than not, is a spur-of-the-moment thing that happens while printing. The surprise is part of the fun.”
An opening reception and gallery talk by Ingber will be held 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 in the Benedict Hall Gallery. The public is invited and admission is free.
Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Friday and 1 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Admission is free.
