The Sweet Briar tennis team took to the road for the weekend to compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Fall Individual Championships held this year at Hollins University.
The day began with light sprinkles and sporadic showers to make the outdoor hard courts wet and unsafe for play. Rather than the usual tournament format of two singles followed by one doubles round, play was moved to Roanoke Country Club for two rounds of doubles that were completed on the har-tru court surface, which is clay-like and playable in damp conditions. The Vixen team had a terrific showing overall today, with many players advancing to their respective rounds within their flights.
The doubles team of senior Virginia Edahl (Charlotte, N.C.) and first-year player Moriah Burke (Rockville, Mary.) won their two rounds of doubles today. Their first match was against Bridgewater College’s team of Megan Mathias and Olivia Stone with Sweet Briar victorious with a score of 8-6.
The Vixen duo advance to the quarterfinals of the “A” flight and took the team of Anne Ailstock and Sarah Budrus of Hollins University to the wire. Edahl and Burke, seeded second in this flight, won in the set tie-breaker (7-5) to win the pro-set 9-8. They will match up in the finals with the first-seed team of Blair Brzeski and Ellen Yeatman of Washington and Lee on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
