The Sweet Briar tennis team concludes their fall individual playing season at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Individual play today held at Hollins University. A number of Vixen tennis players advanced to semi- and finals rounds.
Recap of Sunday’s matches:
Flight “A” Singles: Sweet Briar senior Virginia Edahl (#2) played her semi-final match against Roanoke’s first-year player Laura Dodson (#3). After a battle of powerful baseline groundstrokes, Dodson prevailed and won by set scores of 6-3, 7-5.
Flight “B” Singles”: First-year player Moriah Burke (Rockville, Mary.) handily beat Hollins University player Mariah Bryant (#3)in the semi-final round in straight sets dropping only two games; scores were 6-2, 6-0. Burke advanced to the finals to challenge Washington and Lee’s Ellen Yeatman (#1). Despite some long rallies and many deuce games, Yeatman’s steadiness and minimal number of unforced errors earned her the win with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Flight “E” Singles: Sweet Briar’s Glory Bowman (‘13/Roanoke, Va.) met up with Washington and Lee’s Kerry Cotter (#1) for the semi-final match. Kotter won 6-0, 6-0.
Flight “F” Singles: First-year player Sarah Manter (Brunswick, Maine) lost her semi-final match to Washington and Lee player Laura Simmons 6-0, 6-1.
Flight “G” Singles: Two Sweet Briar players competed in this flight.
Flight “H” Singles: Three Vixen players competed in this division.
Semifinals: Jen Hall (#1) of Washington & Lee University defeated Ann Roach 6-0, 6-0 Kristin Nagy (Roanoke College) defeated Morgan Franke, 6-2, 6-1
Consolation Finals: Sweet Briar’s Ann Roach defeated Ann Morris (Randolph College) 6-2, 6-0; Roach went on to defeat Caitlyn Hoerr (Hollins University) 8-5.
Doubles Flight “A” Finals: The first doubles team of Edahl-Burke played concluded their season in the finals against Washington and Lee’s team of Blair Brzeski and Ellen Yeatman (#1). Brzeski-Yeatman took the win with a score of 8-0.

The Vixen tennis team will begin their spring season competition on February 25 when they host Ferrum College.
