The 2009-2010 Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series continues at noon Tuesday, Nov. 10 with “Darwin’s Contemporaries,” featuring music composed during the lifetime of Charles Darwin. The concert will begin at noon in Memorial Chapel, and admission is free.
Like all the events in this year’s Gager series, the concert is in keeping with the College’s honors theme, “Evolution/Devolution.”
The program includes Frédéric Chopin’s “Ballade,” performed by pianist Nicholas Ross; selections from Robert Schumann’s “Kinderszenen,” performed by Sweet Briar senior pianist Mary Beth Turner; and Carl Reinecke’s “Undine” sonata, featuring guest flutist Mary Ann Archer accompanied by pianist Anna Billias.
Vocal performances include Felix Mendelssohn’s “O Rest in the Lord,” by SBC senior Catherine Gumpman; Robert Schumann’s “Widmung” and “Seit ich ihn gesehen,” by juniors Sarah Schofield and Temma Clark-Braverman, respectively; and Chopin’s “The Ring,” performed by sophomore Alexandra St. Pierre.
The Gager series is made possible by the support of Forrest Gager, in memory of his wife, Janet, who served as Sweet Briar’s director of public relations. All concerts are held in Memorial Chapel and are free to the public.
The next event in the series, “Variations I: Theme and Variations,” will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 9 in Memorial Chapel.
Audience members are invited to bring a bag lunch to enjoy during the performance. For more information on the Gager Community Concert Series, contact Jonathan Green at jgreen@sbc.edu or (434) 381-6205.
