The teacher preparation program at Sweet Briar College is accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. The educational programs (licensure areas) are approved by the Virginia Board of Education. Students who complete our course of study meet all the Commonwealth’s education requirements for initial licensure to teach in Virginia’s elementary or secondary schools. In accordance with the Higher Education Act (HEA), the Education Department complies with all Title II reporting requirements to the Virginia Department of Education.
As of September 1, 2015, there were 16 students accepted into the teacher education program with an additional six receiving the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree. As of September 1, 2016, there were 13 students accepted into the teacher education program with an additional two receiving the M.A.T. degree.
All students who completed the teacher preparation program at Sweet Briar College passed required standardized exams as prescribed by the Commonwealth of Virginia (PRAXIS I, PRAXIS II, VCLA and RVE (for elementary candidates). All M.A.T. students passed the examinations (100% pass rate).
