Independent Competitors

NCEA & IHSA competition aren’t the only ways we give our students the competitive edge, we also attend USEF and locally rated horse shows.

From riders entering their first walk-trot class at one of our In-House Horse Shows to students competing in the Adult Equitation, we know that your competitive goals are as individual as you are. For students looking for additional competitive opportunities outside of our collegiate teams we have independent competitor options.

USEF Rated Horse Shows

Students with their own horses or approved students on Sweet Briar owned horses have competed at various USEF Rated Horse Shows at venues including the World Equestrian Center (Ohio), Upperville, Swan Lake Stables, Tryon International Equestrian Center, and the Virginia Horse Center.

Locally Rated Horse Shows

Sweet Briar competes in locally rated SWVHJA (Southwest Virginia Hunter Jumper Association) competitions and participates in the SWVHJA Annual Show & Medal Finals each fall.

Our facility also hosts multiple SWVHJA rated horse shows during the school year welcoming both student and outside competitors.

In-House Horse Shows

Students just starting out on their competitive journey are able to participate and gain experience at horse shows only open to current riding program students. These shows allow for competitive feedback and help with goal setting.

Hunter Trials

Our competitive opportunities don’t just take place in the ring. Each fall our Hunter Trial is a great opportunity for riders to take advantage of our variety of outdoor riding spaces and natural jumps.
