Winning Tradition

Whether you are looking to ride on a competitive collegiate team or continue to compete individually at USEF and locally rated horse shows our program can help you reach your goals.

Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA)

The Sweet Briar College IHSA Team competes in Zone IV Region 4 in central Virginia. The team has seen success at the region, zone, and national level - most recently finishing 3rd at 2022 IHSA Nationals as a team after winning the regional championship in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. Individually, students have a history of post-season success with the 2022 IHSA Open Flat Champion being Emmy Longest ’24 and Makayla Benjamin ’18 winning the Cacchione Cup in 2018.

National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA)

Sweet Briar College became the first single discipline team and first Division III school to join the NCEA in 2017. Since then, they have blazed a trail and collected accolades on their way. As 2021 Single Discipline National Champions, they continued their success into 2022 as the ECAC Single Discipline Conference Champions for the Southern Region.

American National Riding Commission (ANRC)

The American National Riding Commission format is integral to the schooling process that Sweet Briar’s instruction follows. Working on the principles of stabilization and the American Forward System of Riding, students gain valuable experience in schooling the sport horse.

Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)

A nations cup style equitation final, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship utilizes the top four rider and horse pairs for a 3’ equitation championship.

Independent Competitors

From riders entering their first walk-trot class at one of our In-House Horse Shows to students competing in the Adult Equitation, we know that your competitive goals are as individual as you are. For students looking for additional competitive opportunities outside of our collegiate teams we have independent competitor options.
