Travel

Don’t get stuck while traveling!

Review these important guidelines to follow when traveling on an F-1 visa.

Sweet Briar has several breaks throughout the year in which you can travel within the US or abroad.

When? Why? How Long? Fee to stay on campus?
September Between 3 and 12 Week Session 1 day No
Mid-November Thanksgiving 7 days Maybe
December Winter Break 20 days Yes
March Spring Break 7 days Maybe
April Between 3 and 12 Week Session 1 day No
May-August Summer Break ~90 days Yes

Note: these break duration and fees are subject to change.

  • You may travel outside of the U.S. ONLY if your passport is still valid for at least six months after your intended return to Sweet Briar after the break AND you have a SBC DSO sign your I-20 on page 2 BEFORE you depart.
  • You may travel within the U.S. during breaks without needing a travel signature.
  • You have the option of staying on campus during breaks.
  • If you have an on-campus job, you may work up to 40 hours per week during the summer break. Most on campus employers are not working and will not offer you hours during the winter break.

In the past, international students have traveled to the following places over break:

  • Washington DC
  • New York, New York
  • Miami, Florida
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Toronto, Canada
