Honors students (L to R) Sarah Mihelic ’22, Allison Wandling ’23, Emma Leaseburg ’22, Annika Kuleba ’22 and Ruth De Souza ’22 attended MARCUS
In October, our
Honors Program students presented their research at the Mid Atlantic Regional Conference for Undergraduate Scholarship (
MARCUS). The conference is a presentation venue for undergraduate scholarship in all disciplines and was founded by Sweet Briar in 1999 and hosted at the College through 2018, after which Randolph College served as host.
Since its inception, MARCUS has attracted students from colleges throughout Virginia and surrounding states. They have three options to present their research: a poster presentations, oral presentation and Q&A session, or an elevator speech with Q&A where presenters describes their research in a manner that anyone can understand it.
The Sweet Briar students who participated were Mary Katherine Baker ’22, Ruth De Souza ’23, Ciara Kocik ’23, Annika Kuleba ’22, Emma Leaseburg ’22, Sarah Mihelic ’22, Veronica Nelson ’22 and Allison Wandling ’23.

Michelle Gervasio, engineering professor and director of the Honors Program, commented on the conference: “This was my first time attending MARCUS in person, and it was a wonderful experience! It was very gratifying to see the culmination of so much hard work by so many talented young people. Two of our students opted to give an oral presentation, while the rest participated in the poster session. Everyone did a fantastic job across the board, and I am so proud of how they represented Sweet Briar.”
