A conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee

Sweet Briar College is honored to host a virtual conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee on September 29 from 7:30-9 p.m.

Ms. Gbowee received the Nobel Peace Prize for her leadership of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, which brought together Christian and Muslim women in a nonviolent movement that played a pivotal role in ending Liberia’s civil war in 2003. She is a peace activist, trained social worker and women’s rights advocate. She holds an M.A. in conflict transformation and a Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa, which is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Hosted by Sweet Briar’s leadership core curriculum, Ms. Gbowee will speak on the topic of women’s involvement in armed conflict, conflict transformation and peace negotiations. This special event is part of our Core 130 class, Women and Gender in the World, which every student takes in her first year here. For Sweet Briar community members, there is a virtual viewing in the Murchison Lane Auditorium.
