Members of the Amherst Virginia Art Society have their work on display in Benedict Gallery at Sweet Briar College. The exhibition will be up through Dec. 17.

“Because we have not been able to meet as a full group in our studio, this exhibit means a lot to us,” says co-chair Lois Coward. “It represents work that we have produced during a very dark time in our global history. We hope that it brings the viewer a chance to escape for a while into a world free of the constant worry for our health. Our work represents our collective attempt to not only bring joy and thoughtfulness to the viewer, but it is a source of communication from us to you.”

AVAS was founded in 1992, beginning as the Nelson Alliance for the Arts, and renamed the Amherst Virginia Art Society in 2006. They strive to recognize the wealth of art talent in Amherst County and the surrounding area, support the appreciation of art and explore educational opportunities.

“Prior to the current pandemic, we held Art Tuesdays in the mornings where we would come together to work with fellow artists and share ideas,” says Lois. “Several times during the year we offer workshops in various mediums. We hold quarterly membership meetings to conduct business and have enjoyed guest speakers. We hope to resume these activities after the current health crisis is resolved.”

If you’re on campus, be sure to stop by Benedict Hall to view the exhibition.
