Lacey Tucker ’20 announced as 2020 Presidential Medalist

As an exemplary student, athlete, peer and leader, Lacey Tucker ’20 is the true embodiment of a Sweet Briar woman. We are pleased to announce her as this year’s Presidential Medalist winner.
With a B.S. in engineering science and a minor in mathematics, she maintained a 3.9 GPA throughout her academic career.
“Continuously maintaining a calm exterior and bright and cheery demeanor, Lacey is beloved by her faculty, coaches and classmates. She is a fierce competitor both in the classroom on the field and on the tennis court,” said Dean of Students Marcia Thom-Kaley.
Lacey is a Presidential Scholar, a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society and the recipient of the Nancy Godwin Baldwin Scholarship and Mary Kendrick Benedict Scholarship.
During her four years at Sweet Briar, she has been an outstanding member of the soccer and tennis teams and soccer team captain for two years. Lacey has been recognized on the ODAC All-Academic and the VaSID Academic All-State teams and was the Whiteman Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2018. Lacey also helped Sweet Briar grow by serving as an Admissions Ambassador and Explore Student Assistant for engineering.
Lacey’s passion for engineering led her to conduct undergraduate honors research making mechanical improvements on an automated dipping system used in layer-by layer film production. She completed a software and engineering internship focused on processing and manipulating global satellite images for naval submarine use.
During the summer of 2018, Lacey worked in South Africa for Project Playground, a non-profit organization where she assisted with fundraising, marketing and after-school activities. She was also the president of the QV club for the last two years.
“Part of the mission of Sweet Briar College, both academically and athletically, is to grow future leaders and Miss Tucker is already ahead of most. She is a delight to simply cross paths with on campus as her presence exudes an exemplary example for other Vixens to follow,” said head soccer coach Jason Capps.
