Sweet Briar College will host its first National Collegiate Equestrian Association home meet on Friday, Feb. 16, at the Harriet Howell Rogers Riding Center on campus. The Vixens will compete against Delaware State University, an NCAA Division I school.
Schooling will start at 8:30 a.m., with team introductions and the national anthem at 9. The competition will start at 9:15 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony.
“This is our second semester competing in the NCEA, and we are really excited to host our first event on campus,” said Mimi Wroten, who coaches the NCEA team and directs Sweet Briar’s riding program. “We look forward to sharing our facilities and horses with Delaware State. Our team has been training hard all year, and we’re incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished so far.”
In August, Sweet Briar became the first NCAA Division III school to join the NCEA
. On Sept. 15, 2017, the Vixens officially kicked off their NCEA run
at Delaware State University, booking a narrow 3-4 loss, but taking home the Most Outstanding Player Awards in both events. The home meet will be the NCEA team’s third competition of the season, following a head-to-head at the University of Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 3.

“With UGA being ranked No. 1, I am looking forward to our team having a chance to compete against the best, test ourselves, learn from the experience and develop more refined goals for the rest of the season,” Wroten said.
The team will wrap up its regular season on Thursday, March 15, at the University of Tennessee at Martin against UT Martin and the University of Minnesota Crookston. Sweet Briar will compete in the NCEA National Championships in Waco, Texas, April 17 through 21.
The Feb. 16 event at Sweet Briar is free and open to the public.
