Sweet Briar names outstanding underclasswomen to Alpha Lambda Delta

At a ceremony in Pannell Gallery yesterday, Sweet Briar College inducted seven members from the Class of 2019 into its chapter of the national honor society Alpha Lambda Delta.

Shelby Benny, Cecilia Mahan, Ashton Mays, Anne Meyer, Rachel Moser-Hardy, Caroline Thomas and Madeline Widjaja earned the distinction through outstanding achievement during the 2015-16 academic year.
“We are very proud of these students,” said Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs Pam DeWeese. “They worked extremely hard in their first year at Sweet Briar, and it showed. Every one of them embodies the intellectual curiosity and drive that make Sweet Briar women stand out.”
The students were initiated by President Phil Stone, DeWeese and Professor John Goulde, a longtime faculty member in the religion, classics and philosophy department at Sweet Briar.
Alpha Lambda Delta is an honor society that recognizes academic excellence during a student’s first year in college. The purpose of Alpha Lambda Delta is to promote a continued high standard of learning and to encourage superior academic achievement.
A chapter was established at Sweet Briar in 1991. To be eligible, a student must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in her first academic year.
