Sweet Briar College announced its annual ROSE Awards at a special celebration and reception for all employees on Nov. 7.
Nominations for a ROSE — an abbreviation for Recognition of Staff Excellence — come from co-workers or the nominee’s supervisor. This year, the College received 10 nominations in four categories: Innovation, Exceeding Expectations, Excellence as a Team Member and Excellence in Service. Three winners were selected.
Tim Klocko, vice president for finance and treasurer, announced each of the nominees, who stood to be recognized. President Phil Stone and vice president and general counsel Nancyellen Keane presented a plaque and check for $500 to the winners. Their names also are added to a plaque displayed on campus.
The award for Excellence as a Team Member is given to an employee who exhibits teamwork and cooperation in his or her own department and across campus. The ROSE Award in this category went to payroll coordinator Cindy Sale.
“She’s an unsung hero and I recognize that what she has to go through to have payroll processed accurately and on time is super human,” Klocko read from the nomination notes.
Jeffrey Moore, a journeyman carpenter in the physical plant department, is going home with the Excellence in Service ROSE.
His colleagues wrote of him: “Jeff is a jewel to have on this campus. He delivers impeccable service and solutions with each work order.”
The award for Exceeding Expectations went to registrar Debbie Powell. Klocko read from the nominator’s notes: “Always pleasant, professional and efficient, she’s the go-to person for all of us with questions on academic records, policies and advising issues. You can count on her to deliver the very best under any deadline.”
The ROSE Awards were created in 2006 to allow employees to recognize their peers in the workplace.
The other nominees were Darryl Campbell (Exceeding Expectations), Cyndi Fein (nominated twice, for Excellence as a Team Member and Excellence in Service), Dawn Gatewood (Excellence in Service), Sarah Lewis (Excellence as a Team Member), Cathy Mays (Innovation) and Marcia Thom-Kaley (Innovation).
