Allen assumes the role July 1, 2016. He will join Sweet Briar from West Virginia University Institute of Technology, where since 2014 he served as dean of enrollment services. WVU Tech focuses on delivering four-year STEM programs within the West Virginia University system.

“Given our emphasis on the sciences and that Sweet Briar is one of only two women’s colleges with an ABET-accredited engineering program, we are thrilled that Bill will bring to Sweet Briar invaluable experience attracting students interested in STEM,” Stone said.

While at WVU Tech, Allen supervised 15 staff members across both the admissions and financial aid offices and served on the President’s Executive Council. Prior to his tenure there, Allen worked in enrollment functions for the College of Saint Elizabeth, North Carolina Wesleyan College and Castleton State College.

Early in his career, Allen worked for five years at Mary Baldwin, an all-women’s college at the undergraduate level, as the assistant dean of admissions and financial aid and subsequently as director of financial aid.

“During my more than twenty years in higher education, I have worked at different kinds of institutions, including women’s colleges,” Allen said. “I look forward to bringing all my strategic knowledge to Sweet Briar and being part of the next chapter of the College’s history.”

Allen earned a B.A. in American civilization from George Washington University and an M.A. in U.S. history from James Madison University.
