Rising junior Samantha Yew, of Bronx, N.Y., learned this spring that she is a 2016 VFIC/Altria Leadership Scholarship recipient.

The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges administers the $10,000 award, which is split over two years. Each of the 15 VFIC institutions nominates a sophomore who “shows exceptional academic and leadership promise.”

Yew is double-majoring in business and economics with a minor in math. She also works as a resident assistant, admissions ambassador and judicial secretary, and plays on the tennis team. She has accepted a summer internship with WebMD in Atlanta — an opportunity she discovered through Alumnifire by connecting with 1997 graduate Alicia King.

Yew says she is grateful for the scholarship — and even more motivated.

“This scholarship pushes me to work harder each day,” she said. “It show shows all the hard work and how far I have come because Sweet Briar gave me the resources to do so.”
