Sweet Briar College’s Relay for Life committee will host its main event from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, April 15, in the Student Commons Courtyard. The evening will be filled with live entertainment, activities for all ages, food and a luminary ceremony after dusk to mark a moment of reflection.
Committee co-chairwoman Calee Whitten ’16 says the event is meant to bring together the Sweet Briar and Amherst communities in celebration and remembrance of those who lost their lives to cancer, and of those currently fighting it, along with their caretakers. Composed of students from various classes, the committee is headed by Whitten and fellow seniors Torrey Schwartz and Megan Shuford, as well as faculty advisor Tom Loftus.
The Relay for Life committee works throughout the year to raise money through a variety of awareness and fundraising events. Donations benefit the American Cancer Society and its mission of finding a cure for cancer.
“This year’s committee has worked extremely hard and has done an amazing job,” Whitten said. “Relay for Life’s mission is very close to all of our hearts and we are passionate about being a part of this committee. I am so excited about our main event because it is going to be a lot of fun for everyone, and I cannot think of a better way to end my time at Sweet Briar than hosting this event with this group of wonderful women.”
