One in five women in the U.S. becomes a victim of sexual assault while in college. To create awareness and fight this statistic, students in Sweet Briar’s Business Seminar will host a “1 in 5 5K” at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 16, on the College’s campus. All proceeds will benefit the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN).
18 miles of trails provide plenty of room for running and walking Sweet Briar’s campus.
Registration for the race begins at 8 a.m. in the quad. Combo tickets for the race and a T-shirt are $20 with a deadline of April 4. Race tickets only can be purchased online or at the event and are $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger, and $6.50 for students with valid I.D. T-shirts can also be purchased separately — for $20 online or $15 in Prothro. All online orders are subject to a processing fee.
Each runner will receive a bracelet and 10 raffle tickets. Prizes will be awarded to the top runners in each category. Post-race events include T-shirt tie-dyeing, a raffle/silent auction, a talk by a guest speaker from RAINN, face painting and more.
is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization and was named one of “America’s 100 Best Charities” by Worth magazine. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE and online.rainn.org
