Visiting assistant professor of creative writing Jeff Martin is hoping for a variety of entries in everything from poetry and playwriting to fiction, nonfiction and songwriting. Collaborations are also welcome.

“What they choose to write about is up to them,” he says.

While he expects a lot of Sweet Briar students to participate, the event is for students from other local colleges and high schools, as well.

“Open mics are great for building communities of writers,” Martin says. “Students get to meet other writers in a way that’s more informal than a workshop, and they get the experience of performing their work aloud — often for the first time — and the confidence that comes from doing so.”

He also notes that the timing is perfect for this type of event.

“It’s cold and dark outside, but for a couple hours you can come into a warm, bright place and be part of that community.”
