New VP for alumnae relations and development announced

Sweet Briar College is excited to welcome A.P. “Bun” Perkinson as vice president for alumnae relations and development. He will replace David Shufflebarger, who served as acting vice president for alumnae relations and development since July 13.
Perkinson is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and a graduate of The McCallie School and Davidson College.
He previously served as director of development at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., as well as at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. Perkinson became president of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in his 30s and served for more than 12 years, turning the school around from the brink of closing to a successful operation.
He was chairman of the North Carolina 2000 Commission by appointment of Gov. James G. Martin, charged with developing goals for public education in the state. A member of The Registry for College & University Presidents and interim vice president for institutional advancement at numerous independent colleges, Perkinson has experience in leading strategic planning processes for colleges and other nonprofit organizations, as well as in re-structuring external relations programs.
Perkinson was named North Carolina Boss of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). He served on the NCAA council and as president of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges; has been a member of the Southern Growth Policies Board and the Board of Visitors of McCallie School and Davidson College; and received an honorary LLD from Davidson College.
A Presbyterian elder, Perkinson is married to interior designer and entrepreneur Ellen Forester Perkinson. Ellen, a Sumter, S.C., native, graduated from Queens University in Charlotte and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The two have four sons and nine grandsons and reside in Pinehurst, N.C.
“I feel fortunate to be invited by President Stone to serve him and the College during the coming months as we move Sweet Briar forward into what I am confident will be a future even more remarkable than its storied past,” Perkinson wrote in a statement.
“The extraordinary loyalty, determination and verve demonstrated by our alumnae mark Sweet Briar as a very special place. I am fortunate as well to be part of a very able ten-person team in alumnae relations and development. Half of us are new to the office and half are veterans counting more than eighty years of service to the College among them.”
