In July, Sweet Briar welcomed Monica Dean as director of media, marketing and communications, following Christy Jackson’s departure earlier that month.

Dean knows the College and its communications office well, having held the same position from 1988 to 2000.

“Sweet Briar is home,” Dean said. “My husband also worked here, we owned a home on campus, and we reared our daughter here. Having followed closely the events in the life of the College since the March 3 closure announcement, I am thrilled to be a part of Sweet Briar’s revival. Nothing pleases me more.”

After leaving Sweet Briar 15 years ago, Dean went on to manage internal communications for GE Financial Assurance and Genworth Financial. She was a Coda Fellow for Save the Elephants in Kenya and senior associate director of philanthropy at The Nature Conservancy from 2006 to 2012.

In addition to managing Beau Soleil Farm, her own horse boarding stable just across the road from Sweet Briar, Dean is an organizational consultant specializing in marketing and fundraising for both nonprofit and for-profit companies.

She lives at the farm with husband Robert Steckel, their horses, dog and cat, and she spends most of her free time riding.
