Sweet Briar riders recently competed in the 38th annual American National Riding Commission Intercollegiate Equitation Championship at St. Andrew’s University in Laurinburg, N.C.

The College’s national team finished fourth overall and the novice team finished in sixth place in the championship, which was held the weekend of April 15.

Makayla Benjamin ’18 was fourth overall in the national division, third in the medal and fifth in the program ride. Kathryne Richard ’15 was first and Jenny Mix ’15 was third in the written phase of the national division.

The national team was second in the written phase, third in the medal and program ride phases, and fourth in the derby phase. The novice team won the written phase, helped by first-year Kara Katona’s second-place finish. The team placed fourth in the program ride and fifth in the medal phase.

The ANRC national championships are divided into four phases: A written test on riding theory and equine science; a program ride in the flat; a hunter seat equitation medal course; and a derby-style equitation course over natural obstacles in a field. Each division allows riders to compete individually and as members of a team.
