IHSA team maintains regional lead

Sweet Briar’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association team took the championship at Randolph College Saturday, Feb. 8, and finished fourth at home on Sunday to preserve a 13-point lead in regional competition.

The leaders were bunched together in Sunday’s show, and IHSA coach Lizzie Fisch says her team got a lot of help from several beginning-level riders to stay within four points of the first- and second-place teams. The University of Virginia and Washington and Lee teams tied for the most points, while Bridgewater College and Hollins University shared reserved champion honors.

On Saturday, Makayla Benjamin ’18 was the high-point rider with first-place finishes in both open fences and intermediate flat. Kathryne Richard ’15 was first in open flat and second in intermediate fences; Hannah Bowers ’15 won her novice flat class; Ali Turek ’18 finished third in both open flat and open fences; Ashleigh Dove ’18 finished fifth in novice flat; Jenny Mix ’15 finished fifth in intermediate flat; Lydia Gullicksen ’18 finished fifth in beginning walk, trot, canter; Stacey Karmen ’15 was fifth in walk, trot; Julia Rhinehart ’18 was sixth in intermediate fences; and Katie Stuckwisch ’17 finished sixth in walk, trot.

On Sunday, Stuckwisch won her walk, trot class; Gullicksen was second in beginning walk, trot, canter; Richard was second in intermediate fences and sixth in open flat; Benjamin was second in intermediate flat and sixth in open fences; Courtney Barry ’18 was second in novice fences and Madi Cromwell ’16 was fifth in novice flat.

The next show is at Bridgewater on Saturday, Feb. 14, followed by Hollins on Feb. 21 and the UVa show and regional finals in Charlottesville on Sunday, Feb. 22.
