Lacy to sing senior voice recital

Caroline Lacy will perform a senior voice recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Sweet Briar College’s Memorial Chapel.

Lacy, a sociology major with minors in anthropology and music, has included songs on the program that have special meaning for her. Handel’s “Verdi Prati” is the first piece she performed as a student at Sweet Briar.
“The aria is about an individual who wants to remember the beauty of the green meadows, because they know that once they leave, the memory of that place is all they will have,” she says. “I think it is appropriate to come full circle and have the opportunity to perform this piece for my senior recital.”
“Laurie’s Song” by Aaron Copeland is one of the more challenging vocal selections she has worked on, but also is one of her favorites. It, too, evokes for her the sense of moving on, something she is sure will resonate with her classmates.
“It’s about the simultaneous excitement and ambivalence that people feel when they are about to transition into a new part of their lives, and I think that the sentiments that are broached in the piece will be emotions that everyone, particularly graduating seniors, will be able to directly relate to.”
Lacy also will perform the hymn “How Can I Keep From Singing,” which she says is a reminder that, while grim things go on around us, there are still many places to find joy.
