On Thursday, United Way of Central Virginia honored Sweet Briar voice instructor Marcia Thom-Kaley with the Volunteer of the Year award during a ceremony for its “Opening Doors … Changing Lives” campaign.
Overall, United Way handed out 15 distinguished awards to project coordinators, companies and individuals for their efforts to promote education, income and health in Central Virginia.

The award means a lot to Lynchburg native Thom-Kaley, who has volunteered with the organization for five years.

“I am so honored to be this year’s recipient — especially when so very many people volunteer their time and efforts to this wonderful organization,” she said.

Each fall, Thom-Kaley directs and choreographs “Feenomenal Follies,” a variety show that celebrates United Way partner agencies. Local entertainers and “business folks” from across the community come together to lip sync and dance, Thom-Kaley said.

“[The show] brings out the hidden performer in everyone — we all have a ball!”
