Marcia Thom directs the Sweet Briar choir.
Sweet Briar’s Concert and Chamber choirs and its new eight-singer group “Octavo” will perform during Homecoming and Families Weekend at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in Memorial Chapel.
The choirs will sing selections from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Suor Angelica,” which they’ll also perform on Nov. 3 with Lynchburg’s Opera On The James in its production at E.C. Glass High School, along with singers from Randolph College and Liberty University.
“The story of ‘Suor Angelica’ takes place in a convent,” said Sweet Briar voice instructor and choir director Marcia Thom. “This production is unique for our students — not only because our choirs will appear as the offstage chorus, but because 25 of our students will also be featured on stage as the abbey nuns.”
Other works performed during the Oct. 26 concert at Sweet Briar will include Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and “How Lovely Are the Messengers” by Mendelssohn, as well as several Sweet Briar songs in honor of Homecoming.
