In the end, it was the Vixens’ performance over fences that secured the reserve champion team title at the ODAC Equestrian Championships at Hollins University on Friday, April 8.

Hollins dominated the field, winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships for the second year in a row.

Sweet Briar and Washington and Lee University were tied at the end of three classes, but when the tiebreaking formula was figured using the raw scores from both over fences classes, Sweet Briar out-rode W&L by more than 10 points.

Three of the Vixens’ four riders also made the 2011 all-ODAC team. Lauren Perhala ’12 placed fifth, Elizabeth Hansborough ’13 placed seventh and Olivia Smith made the list at No. 10. Smith, a first-year, was named Rookie of the Year.

“At the end of a long day, I was extremely proud of the SBC ODAC team,” said coach Mimi Wroten, who will move from associate director to director of the riding program in May.

“All of our riders were new to the competition format and were able to put in very consistent performances over fences to clinch the reserve champion team title. Having three out of our four riders make the all-ODAC team showed the strength and depth of our team.”
