Coopamah to speak about Horn of Africa

Assistant professor of international affairs Padmini Coopamah will present “Horn of Africa” as part of the 2011 Great Decisions Lecture Series. She will speak at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 in the Lynchburg Public Library Community Room.
Great Decisions, an annual series examining global issues, is sponsored by the Lynchburg Branch of the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters of Lynchburg, the YWCA and the Lynchburg Public Library.
Coopamah will talk about the Horn of Africa, where recent reports of hijacked ships have renewed fears about security threats posed by the failed Somali state and weak governments in neighboring countries. She will examine questions such as what role can and should the international community play in ensuring security in that part of the world, and discuss the challenges Africans face to police the continent.
Coopamah is the third speaker in the series, which begins Feb. 3 with a lecture by Lynchburg College’s Marek Payerhin titled “Germany Ascendant.” John Abell of Randolph College will present “Responding to the Financial and Economic Crisis” on Feb. 10, and on Feb. 24, LC’s associate chaplain, Anne Gibbons, will present “Rebuilding Haiti.”
All lectures begin at 3 p.m. in the Community Room, with light refreshments being served at 2:30. If Lynchburg Public Schools are closed the day of a lecture, it will be rescheduled for the first Thursday in March if possible.
