Abstract Thought: Selected Prints from the Permanent Collection,” will open with a reception and gallery talk by Alexandra Eads ’11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 in Sweet Briar’s Babcock Gallery.
Eads served as a curatorial assistant for the exhibition of prints from the College’s permanent collection. The featured artists will include Anni Albers, Vija Celmins, Ida Kohlmeyer and Bridget Riley among others. Eads assisted in researching each of the artists selected for inclusion by art galleries director Karol Lawson, who curated the show.
The organizing theme is mid- to late-20th-century abstraction as seen in prints, Lawson said, including etchings, lithographs, silk-screens and aquatints. Nearly all the artists are female. Many of the works were acquired by Sweet Briar Friends of Art through fundraising efforts; others came to the College as gifts, often from or in honor of alumnae and their families.
The show will remain on view through March 11. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, call (434) 381-6248 or e-mail
