William Schlesinger, president of the
Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., will present this year’s Julia B. Waxter Environmental Forum at Sweet Briar College.
The lecture, which will address the effects of global climate change, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Wailes Lounge at the Florence Elston Inn & Conference Center. Admission is free.
Schlesinger is former dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University, where he also served as the James B. Duke Professor of Biogeochemistry. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
According to the Institute’s Web site, Schlesinger has spent more than 30 years “investigating the link between environmental chemistry and global climate change” and has recently focused his work on “understanding how trees and soil influence atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.”
Sweet Briar’s Waxter Forum is funded by Julia Baldwin Waxter, an SBC alumna, and her husband, Bill. The series presents lectures focusing on environmental issues and concerns that affect today’s world.
