Gager Concert Series continues Nov. 11

The second event in the 2008-2009 Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series will be held at noon, Tuesday, Nov. 11 in Memorial Chapel at Sweet Briar College. Admission is free. The concert will last approximately 50 minutes and people are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch to enjoy during the event.
Peter Worford, principal cellist for the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and a music instructor at Sweet Briar College, will perform pieces by Frederic Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff with pianist Noemi Otto.
A native of Romania, Otto has been on the faculty of Sweet Briar College, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (now Randolph College) and Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. She currently teaches at Lynchburg College and is the music director of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lynchburg.
Sweet Briar sophomore Caroline King will perform “Fantasie Op. 70” by Gabriel Faure on flute. King, a double major in music and international affairs from Peachtree City, Ga., has been playing the flute since age 10.
In high school, she won the John Philip Sousa award, which honors the top student in a high school band and recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication.
Rafael Scarfullery rounds out the program. A native of the Dominican Republic, Scarfullery is a classical guitarist, composer and conductor. He teaches at Sweet Briar College, Randolph College and Lynchburg College.
The Gager series is made possible by the support of Forrest Gager, in memory of his wife, Janet, who served as Sweet Briar’s director of public relations. All concerts are held in Memorial Chapel and are free to the public.
