Sweet Briar College will host its annual Children’s Dance Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 in Murchison Lane Auditorium. The event features performances by local children who participate in dance classes at SBC. It is free and open to the public.
This year’s theme is “Poems of Winter.”
“The children actually choreograph everything themselves with the help of their teachers. That’s just the creative process that we work with,” said Professor Ella Magruder, who directs the dance class program. Sweet Briar dance students teach the classes.
The young performers’ compositions are based on winter-related poems that they’ve read or have written themselves. Some pieces, such as an Irish dance, were choreographed by their teachers.
“But mainly this is all kid-generated,” Magruder said. “[There will be] some very beautiful little solos and group dances that they’ve come up with. It’s going to be a fun performance. There are a lot of community kids.”
