Recycling is booming business on Sweet Briar’s campus

Sweet Briar’s physical plant department announced today that the campus community has achieved across-the-board and dramatic increases in the College’s recycling program.
Overall, the campus recycled approximately 60 percent more cardboard and mixed paper in 2007 than in 2006. Physical plant director Steve Bailey cites the collection of cardboard from the Prothro kitchen and the addition of 100 recycle bins in residential halls as the two primary reasons for the improvement.
This year plastic recycling was up by more than 150 percent over 2006 levels. The increase resulted from collecting materials bearing numbers 1 through 7 of the plastics recycling code. Previously only No. 1 and No. 2 plastics were collected.
No statistics for glass recycling were made available because some of the 2006 collections were combined with the current year’s.
Bailey said the department is adding two additional recycling bins at the physical plant, and will notify campus residents when they are in place. The College also continues to collect recyclable metals and is working with a new company to provide a more cost-effective pick-up service.
“As the recycling program grows, we will expand our recycling to other areas such as the academic and administrative departments,” Bailey said.
“Our students have played a major role in the dramatic increase in recycling from our residence halls and again, we appreciate everyone’s effort in making the recycling program a success.”
