Professor O’Connor was born and raised in Minot, Maine, and completed his B.F.A. at the University of Southern Maine. After undergraduate studies, he went on to be a resident and staff member at the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. He received his M.F.A. in Ceramics from Syracuse University, with the main focus of his research revolved around wood firing. While at Syracuse, O’Connor designed and constructed a train-style wood kiln. He later went on to publish his first article about his kiln in the Log Book, an international journal devoted to wood firing. After graduate school he was awarded a yearlong artist-in-residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. In 2012, he traveled to China as a visiting artist for West Virginia University, and has held visiting positions at St. Lawrence University and the University of North Dakota. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
